Direct Appeal

Our Direct Appeal campaign is our most important fundraiser each year. More than 80% of our total fundraising dollars are from our Direct Appeal campaign. Your entire contribution is tax deductible and many employers match donations. Donate Online Now.

What is the Direct Appeal?
The Direct Appeal (DA) is a fundraising campaign to raise money from BSI families to pay for the extra staff and important enrichment programs that make BSI an exceptional school. Last year, we raised over $410,000, roughly 70% of which came from the Direct Appeal. We need you again to meet our Direct Appeal goal of raising $526,000 to forward-fund for the 2018-2019 school year.
What will the money be used for?
Since BSI opened in 2009, the Direct Appeal has funded Teaching Assistants and programs outside the standard curriculum, such as Chess, Construction Kids, BEAM, Art supplies, Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, science supplies, and all the extras that we all value.
Why are Teacher’s Assistants so important?

A second adult in the classroom allows teachers to focus on instruction and lowers the student-teacher ratio. Research shows the more adults that know your child in school, the higher the likelihood of academic and social success. Last year, our first graduating class received invitations to attend the best high schools in NYC.  About 80% of our 8th grade kids were offered seats in NYC’s highly coveted specialized high schools and 82% of the kids were given placement in their #1 or #2 choice.

BSI is a public school, funded by the city, so why do we ask you to chip in?

Over the years, public schools have had their budgets whittled down. And while the NYC Department of Education recognizes gifted children as a special needs population, it doesn’t provide extra funds for differentiated curriculum and enrichment programs. In addition, BSI does not qualify for Title I and Title III funding. BSI receives “Fair Student Funding,” about $4,000 per student, per year.

Why is the DA campaign the most effective way for a school to raise money?

1. The campaign doesn’t require you or your children to sell anything for the school.

2. Our PTO is a non-profit organization and your contribution is tax deductible.

3. As a 501(c) (3) organization, many of your employers may offer a matching funds program. Last year our PTO earned approximately $35,000 in matching funds. Check our BSI PTO’s Double the Donation page to see if your company will match your generosity.

4. It’s a fundraiser with low overhead costs.

How much should I contribute?

Every donation is helpful! We respect that every family’s circumstances are different. We encourage you to contribute what you are able. All are welcome at BSI, no matter what. We also recognize our good fortune, in having in our community those who are able to give the full suggested amount of $1,500 per student in order to meet past budgets. To make donating more manageable, recurring donations in smaller amounts can be set up right here on our website! Our fundraising goal this year is $526,000, but our ultimate goal is 100% participation, with everyone donating in amounts that work for their family’s budget. High participation rates boost our appeal to grant-givers, whether from local government, corporate or private foundations. With everyone’s support, we can secure another year with exceptional enrichment programs and teaching resources.

Are these donations tax deductible?

Your contributions are fully tax deductible. Our PTO is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) IRS Tax ID 27-1299073.

How do I donate?

Checks should be made payable to “BSI PTO, Inc.” and accompanied by the BSI PTO Direct Appeal donation form. It can be sent in your child’s backpack or by mail to: BSI PTO Inc., 50 Avenue P, 4th Floor, Brooklyn, NY 11201. THE EASIEST WAY TO DONATE IS VIA BSIPTO.ORG. Just click the “Donate Now” button on the right-hand side and follow the directions.

My company matches my donations. How does BSI receive the match?

Before you donate, please make sure your company matches donations to a PTO. (Our PTO is officially recognized as a registered non-profit organizations.) Also note, many companies participate in matching of fundraising special events.  Many companies have a deadline of April 30th or they match funds quarterly. Thank you for making BSI a special place. Our goals for our children’s education are made possible because of the energy, passion and generosity of our community.
