This Sunday, November 14, we have tons of fun events planned at BSI PTO’s Virtual Book Fair! Are you joining us?
The Book Fair Shop is Now Open! The BSI PTO’s Virtual Book Fair is this Sunday, November 14 from 2-4pm but you can shop and post a book recommendations today! We do hope you’ll join us live for the fun activities we have planned. So far we have five teacher read-alouds and one author read-aloud scheduled. Here’s the schedule (more will be announced soon).
The Flipgrid is up, too! So many of you enjoyed this last year so we brought it back. It’s a fun way to get your child involved as they record one minute book recommendations for their classmates. It’s a fun way to share their favorite books!
When a student posts a Flipgrid book recommendation, their recommended book will be featured on the CFF website under “BSI Student recommendations,” their video recommendation may be played live on Zoom during the Live Book Fair Event AND they will be entered into a raffle to win a free book!
Please note: Students must use their @bsi686.org email addresses in order to be able to post a Flipgrid response
Our partner, the Center for Fiction (CFF), will give BSI’s PTO 20% of all book sales online or in store now through Sunday, Nov. 21 (new extended date!). Their beautiful store is also open for browsing if you prefer. Just mention BSI at the register or code BSI21 if you purchase on their website.
Many teacher’s wish lists are already up too. If your child’s teacher doesn’t have a wishlist up, you can buy them a CFF gift card, and 20% of that will go to the PTO as well. These gift cards make great holiday gifts for family and friends. You’re supporting a great local business and your child’s school.

Through the PTO, BSI families help keep BSI a great place for our kids to learn, grow, and make life-long friends. You can help: attend PTO meetings, volunteer time for PTO community events, or join other families on the PTO board.
Did you know that the PTO raises 100% of the funds for TAs, Specialty Teachers, recess support, and most enrichment activities (like chess, debate, art & science supplies, special instruction programs, music, band and more)? These funds help make BSI a unique space for creative and integrative learning, and one of the most sought after schools in NYC. And our kids get to go there!
Did you know 80% of all PTO funds for the school come from the Direct Appeal?
The Direct Appeal is the PTO’s main fundraising campaign, where we ask BSI families, friends, corporate partners, and matching-grant employers to donate money for our BSI kids. We need your help!

|Did you know that every donation, of any amount, matters A LOT? We ask that ALL BSI families give whatever they can. Our goal is 100% of families participating in the Direct Appeal, so that we can show to grant makers and other funders that we are all in this together for our kid’s education. But we know that families have different circumstances, and not everyone can give the same. That is OK. Everyone is welcome at BSI!|
Did you know that everyone asks “How much should I give?” The answer: Whatever works for your family’s budget. Then everyone asks: “No really, how much?” Our answer: We need to raise about $1500 per student to provide all the TAs, Specialty Teachers, recess support, and enrichment activities that we expect for our kids. If you can afford to give more, please do and thank you! If that amount is not in your family’s budget, no problem! Give what works for you, and thank you!

Dear incoming BSI parents and guardians!
The BSI Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) welcomes you! We are so excited to have your family join our unique city-wide school community! BSI is an incredible place for your children to learn, be challenged, and grow emotionally, and for your whole family to find a community of friends!
What is the PTO? The PTO is an organization, made up of BSI parents, that works to enhance our school community by raising money, organizing events and educational programs, and providing information to parents. An executive board of parent volunteers, elected yearly, oversees the PTO’s activities. All BSI parents/guardians are automatically members of the PTO (not just the board members!).
What does the PTO do? Mainly two very important things! With your help, we raise much needed money for our school and build our school committee by organizing super fun events!!!
Fundraising is one of the PTO’s most important functions. Here at BSI, we want our kids to have an enriched educational experience, as well as a low teacher:student ratio, so every year we set high fundraising goals and work hard to meet them. BSI’s robust enrichment program, provided to all our students sets it apart among public schools. Here are some of the fantastic enrichments that are paid for directly by the PTO:
The PTO traditionally holds many events throughout the year with the main goal of building school community, as well as fundraising. These are all run by, staffed by, and enjoyed by YOU, BSI families! The pandemic has required us to be flexible, and hold more virtual events than in-person over the past 18 months. But this year, we’re hoping to get as many in person events safely up and running as possible. Some events to look forward to include:
Ice Cream Social – September. Especially geared towards welcoming new families.
Harvest Fest – October
BSI Book Fair at the Center for Fiction – November
Read-A-Thon – Winter break and beyond
Chess Festival – February
BSI Gala and Auction – May or June. The party of the year!
Get involved!! We need your help to pull off all this fun stuff! Donating time is just as valuable as donating money!! Look out for more information coming soon about volunteer opportunities for the 2021-2022 school year. And please join us at our first PTO events in September: PTO Meeting via Zoom (tentative date Sept 23rd at 7pm) and the Ice Cream Social (tentative date September 26th in the afternoon).
Stay Informed!! BSI uses a private communication tool, Konstella, for most school-wide PTO communications and committee sign ups. Everything shared on Konstella is only accessible to our parents, teachers, and staff. Instructions on how to join Konstella will be sent out via school administration.
